Welcome to our twentieth edition of Diamond Times.
First, let me apologize for the delay in sending this
month’s newsletter. I was in Orlando at the American
Gem Society Conclave and thought there would be
some interesting news to come out of the
conference that I could share.
I was right. Little did I know that the most important
event at Conclave for the seven hundred attendees,
the Shipley Award Luncheon, would include the
presentation of the Shipley Award to yours truly.
Robert M. Shipley was the founder of both the
Gemological Institute of America and the American
Gem Society. Every year the Robert M. Shipley
Award is conferred on a current or past member of
the Society. To qualify for the award the recipient
must have made significant accomplishments in the
field of gemology and must be a vocal supporter of
the Society in his or her community. Furthermore,
the candidate must perform exemplary service to and
on behalf of the Society. The beneficiary of the
award must have performed service to other industry
organizations and last but not least must have
commendable personal ideals and character.
Given the criteria, you can imagine how shocked I
was when my name was called. It is the highest
honor the Society confers on one of its members and
I am proud to be included in a list of industry leaders
that have left an indelible mark on the jewelry
industry.
| Jeweler of the Month - Eric Bentley |

The world of jewelry had always been an interest of
mine. As a young boy, I collected numerous semi-
precious gems and studied their origins. But, it wasn't
until after I became a chef that I realized that my
true passion was to become a professional jeweler.
A few years after graduating from Hennepin
Technical College, I found myself working in a jewelry
store. I enjoyed it, but found myself wanting to learn
more. I decided to study diamonds through the
Gemological Institute of America...that's when I knew
I wanted to become a professional jeweler.
In 2004, I had the opportunity to join one of the best
jewelers in the United States. The quality, honesty
and reputation drew me to R.F. Moeller Jeweler, and
the experience has been more rewarding than I ever
imagined.
I look forward to sharing my diamond knowledge and
expertise with you. My goal is to gain your trust and
to become your jeweler for life. I am committed to
proving to you that no other jeweler can provide you
a better value than R.F. Moeller Jeweler.

Charles Krypell has designed these irresistible
pendants and charms for those sweethearts in your
life.
What could be more appropriate for a Mother's Day
gift than fine heirloom jewelry that will be treasured
for generations!
Little sweethearts are crafted in 18kt gold with
precious gemstones of rubies, sapphires, emeralds,
diamonds and pink sapphires.
By choosing appropriate combinations of stone colors
and styles, they can then represent the gender of a
child or grandchild.
As I alluded to in my introduction, I have just
returned from The American Gem Society’s seventy-
second Conclave in Orlando. The American Gem
Society Conclave is the preeminent educational
event in the jewelry industry. Robert M. Shipley,
founder of the American Gem Society, believed way
back in 1934 that diamonds and jewelry were
constantly being misrepresented and that consumers
needed to deal with jewelers they could trust. He
founded the American Gem Society based on three
tenets, knowledge, ethics and consumer protection.
Shipley believed that AGS jewelers should be known
for the quality of their products and their exceptional
service. He believed that exceptional service
increases consumer confidence. He also demanded
that AGS jewelers maintain a fair pricing policy; never
mark up to mark down. Furthermore, AGS Jewelers
must always present a professional appearance
because image is the outward display of
professionalism and AGS stores are required to
maintain a certain look that sets them apart from the
competition. American Gem Society Jewelers must
not only understand the science of gemology but
they must demonstrate it by passing a re-
certification exam. Failure to do so will result in loss
of membership in the Society.
The Conclave provides the jewelers with the forum
necessary to learn from both industry leaders and
business experts. This year’s Conclave was no
exception. Most conventions have a single keynote
speaker—this year’s Conclave had four. Tom Peters,
who most would agree is the preeminent business
consultant in the world and who wrote In Search of
Excellence, delivered a wake up call to the over 700
jewelers in attendance by telling them that their
traditional approach to selling jewelry to men for gift
giving occasions is quickly changing. He went so far
as to say that if your marketing was not directed at
women your future could be bleak. There were also
presentations from six time Emmy Award winning
broadcaster Ross Schafer and another keynote
address from Rick Barrera who wrote the book Over
Promise and Over Deliver. And, if that isn’t enough,
there was a presentation by Jim Murphy from the
Afterburners, a group of Air Force, Navy and Marine
pilots, entitled “Flawless Execution”.
So to say that conclave was memorable is an
understatement. The knowledge gained will help us
meet the tenets of our mission statement which is to
be the Twin Cities premier jeweler, by having the
most qualified staff, the finest inventory and the
desire to continually exceed our customer’s
expectations.
